Peer Review Process

Ophthalmologica Indonesiana (OI) applies a rigorous peer-review process to ensure the scientific quality, originality, relevance, and ethical integrity of all manuscripts considered for publication.

Initial Editorial Screening

All submitted manuscripts undergo an initial screening by the editorial team to assess their compliance with the journal's scope, author guidelines, manuscript requirements, and publication ethics.

At this stage, the editorial team may return manuscripts to the authors for necessary revisions or reject manuscripts that are outside the journal's scope, do not meet the basic submission requirements, or have substantial ethical or scientific concerns.

Manuscripts may also undergo similarity screening as part of the initial editorial assessment.

Peer Review

Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial screening are sent for peer review by qualified reviewers with relevant expertise in the subject area of the manuscript.

OI applies a double-anonymous peer-review process, in which the identities of the authors and reviewers are concealed from each other throughout the review process.

Reviewers are selected based on their relevant expertise, academic qualifications, research experience, and absence of potential conflicts of interest.

Review Process

Each manuscript is generally evaluated by at least two independent reviewers. Reviewers are asked to assess the manuscript based on, among other considerations:

  • originality and contribution to the field;
  • scientific and methodological rigor;
  • clarity and accuracy of the presentation;
  • validity of the data and interpretation;
  • relevance of the conclusions;
  • ethical considerations; and
  • appropriateness of references.

Reviewers provide comments and recommendations to assist the editors in making an editorial decision. The final editorial decision is made by the editor based on the reviewers' comments, the quality of the manuscript, and the journal's editorial policies.

Editorial Decisions

Based on the peer-review process, the possible editorial decisions include:

  • Accept – the manuscript is accepted for publication without further substantive revision.
  • Minor Revision – the manuscript requires limited revisions before a final decision can be made.
  • Major Revision – substantial revisions are required and the revised manuscript may be returned to the reviewers for further evaluation.
  • Reject – the manuscript is not considered suitable for publication in OI.

Authors may be required to revise their manuscripts in response to reviewer comments. Revised manuscripts may be reassessed by the original reviewers or by other reviewers, at the discretion of the editor.

Reviewer Confidentiality

Reviewers are required to maintain the confidentiality of all manuscripts and information obtained during the review process. Reviewers must not disclose, use, or reproduce unpublished information from submitted manuscripts for personal or professional purposes.

Reviewers are also expected to declare any potential conflict of interest and decline the review assignment when a conflict may compromise the impartiality of the review.

Editorial Independence

Editorial decisions are based on the scientific quality, originality, relevance, ethical standards, and peer-review outcome of the manuscript. Editorial decisions are not influenced by the authors' identity, institutional affiliation, nationality, gender, professional position, or ability to pay publication fees.

The editors may reject a manuscript when there are concerns regarding research integrity, ethical conduct, plagiarism, duplicate publication, or other forms of publication misconduct.

OI is committed to conducting peer review in a fair, transparent, and ethical manner in accordance with established principles of scholarly publishing.
